Nurses and midwives of Rakai District, Uganda

Care that walks to the mother, the child, the elder, the village.

MANCO is a charity run by Ugandan nurses and midwives. On Saturdays we turn school compounds in Rakai District into free clinics: antenatal checks for mothers, malaria tests for children, blood pressure checks for grandparents.

How it works

How a gift travels from your phone to a village

Choose a cause

Every cause names a place, a need and a price. A delivery kit is 35,000 shillings. A ride to the health centre is 20,000.

Pay by Mobile Money

Pay our MTN MoMoPay or Airtel Money merchant code from your phone, then send us the transaction ID.

We buy and deliver

The Center that asked for the cause buys the supplies and takes them out on the next outreach day.

Why nurses and midwives

The people who know the road best

A rested, respected midwife makes better decisions at three in the morning.

MANCO was started by nurses and midwives who were tired of watching mothers deliver on the way to the health centre, and of working nights with no one asking how they were. So we look after both: the communities we serve, and the health workers who serve them.

Why we started

Our impact

What a Saturday clinic adds up to

Our work

Six programmes, one way of working

We go to where people are, we listen to local health workers, and we hand over every referral to the nearest government health centre.

All programmes
  • Mother and Newborn Care

Antenatal checks at outreach days, clean delivery kits, and a midwife visit in the first week after birth.

  • Child Health Days

Malaria testing and treatment, growth and nutrition checks, and referrals for children under five.

  • Elder Care at Home

Blood pressure and blood sugar checks for grandparents, and home visits for those who cannot walk to us.

  • Village Outreach Days

Once a month our nurses and midwives turn a school compound into a clinic for a day.

  • Care for the Carers

Wellbeing circles, mentoring for newly qualified midwives, and training that nurses choose for themselves.

  • Health Rights and Voices

We believe healthcare is a human right. We help communities know theirs, and we tell decision makers what we see.

Questions people ask

What does MANCO do?

MANCO (Midwives And Nurses Charity Organisation) is a Ugandan charity run by nurses and midwives. We hold free outreach days in rural villages, give antenatal checks and clean delivery kits to mothers, test and treat children for malaria, check elders for high blood pressure, and support the wellbeing of health workers themselves.

Where does MANCO work?

We began in Rakai District in southern Uganda and currently work across its sub-counties, including Rakai Town, Kacheera, Lwanda, Kyalulangira, Byakabanda and Kagamba. Our constitution allows the Board to extend our work to other parts of Uganda later.

How is my donation used?

When you give to a cause, your money goes to that cause. Every cause lists exactly what it buys and what each item costs. If a cause raises more than its goal, the extra goes to the next most urgent cause in the same programme, and we say so in the updates. General gifts go where the need is greatest.
